Dr. Mrityunjay Singh

Lecture: Materials, Society, and Sustainable Development 

Dr. Mrityunjay Singh is Chief Scientist, Ohio Aerospace Institute, Cleveland, Ohio. He is President of the American Ceramic Society and Governor of Acta Materialia, Inc. He is Academician of the World Academy of Ceramics, Italy and currently serves as Vice President of the International Board of the Academy. He received his Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology-BHU, Varanasi, India in 1983 and did his post-doctoral work at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY. He is a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society, ASM International, and American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He was awarded Distinguished Life Membership of Alpha Sigma Mu-Materials Engineering Honor Society in 2014. He is Honorary Fellow of Indian Institute of Ceramics and also received honorary membership from Materials Research Society of India. He has received Honorary Doctorate from Nagaoka University of Technology in Japan. He is the recipient of more than sixty five national and international awards, including four R&D 100 awards, FLC Technology Transfer Award, EDI Innovation Award, NASA Public Service Medal, NASA Silver Snoopy Award, Order of the Enterprise Award from NASA, two NorTech Innovation Awards, and numerous NASA Group Achievement Awards. He has received Ishikawa International Carbon Prize from Ishikawa Carbon Science and Technology Foundation; Japan Fine Ceramics Association International Prize; and Gottfried Wagner Memorial Award from Japan, Sir Richard Brooks International Award from the European Ceramic Society, ASM International-IIM Visiting Lectureship, Jacques-Lucas Award from ASM International-International Metallographic Society, Distinguished Engineering Achievement Award from Engineers Council, and Madan Mohan Malaviya Award from the Indian Ceramic Society. He has received John Jeppson Medal and Award, President Award, Richard M. Fulrath Award, Samuel Geijsbeek Award, and James I. Mueller Awards from the American Ceramic Society. He received Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Metallurgy Department, IT-Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India in 2004. He has also received Lee Hsun Award from Chinese Academy of Sciences-IMR, Shenyang; Honorary Professorships from Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin; Beijing University of Technology, Beijing; Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Shanghai; and Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xian, China. He has been elected as member of International Institute for the Science of Sintering (IISS), Belgrade, Serbia. He received Einstein Professorship award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS highest honor)in 2013. He has also received Indian Institute of Technology-BHU Distinguished Alumnus Award as well as HTCMC International Contribution Prize in 2013. He has received Toledo Glass and Ceramic Award from the American Ceramic Society and HyMAP International Prize from Busan, Korea in 2014. He received J.S. Minhas Memorial Award and Honorary Membership from Indian Ceramic Society and International Dresden Barkhausen Award from Germany in 2015. He has edited/co-edited fifty books/proceedings and seven journal volumes, authored/co-authored fourteen book chapters/invited reviews and more than two hundred seventy five papers in journals and proceedings. He has delivered numerous keynote and plenary presentations in international conferences, forums, and workshops all over the world. He has chaired/co-chaired numerous international conferences and currently serves on the advisory boards and committees of more than fifteen highly respected international journals and technical publications.

Author of many articles and publications about ceramics i.a. co-author of four-volume publication series about history of Bolesławiec stoneware, which were awarded by Sybilla Award 2009 and 2014 as well as by Stiftung Pro Archaeologia Saxoniae in Dresden

Lecture: Colloidal chemistry in processing of advanced ceramics and composites

Tenured professor of the Faculty of Chemistry Warsaw University of Technology. He graduated at the Faculty of Chemistry Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) in 1974. Now he is the Head of the Chemical Technology Department and the Head of the Advanced Ceramics Laboratory. His scientific interests concerns mainly designing and obtaining advanced ceramic materials on the chemistry base (inorganic chemistry, colloidal chemistry, organic chemistry, polymer chemistry) by investigations of the dense and porous ceramic materials with the intended physicochemical  and mechanical properties and intended microstructure. These materials are dedicated in the electronics, electric engineering (functional ceramics), cosmetic dentistry, fuel cells, ozonation of water and aeration of waste water (porous materials), construction ceramic materials, etc. Now his research work refers to deagglomeration and sintering of nanopowders, synthesis and application of new low-toxic monomers for gelcasting process, design of ceramic-metal and ceramic-polymer composites (polymer matrix composites for dental applications and ceramic matrix composites based on porous ceramic preforms), ferroelectric ceramic-polymer composites as novel materials for tunable and flexible microwave sensors and smart materials based on the shear thickening fluids.

His scientific achievements comprise 3 monographs, 4 chapters in scientific books, over 220 articles published in scientific journals, 320 oral and poster presentations at national and international conferences, 56 invited and plenary lectures, 35 patents and 17 patent applications. He was also author or co-author 50 of technological solutions. He promoted 12 doctors (6 persons are still working on PhD thesis under his direction) and about 100 students performed their MSc and BSc work under his direction. During his work he held a number of responsible functions. In 2002-2008 he was Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry of WUT, during 2008-2015 he was Vice-Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Ceramics and Building Materials. Since 2009 he is Vice-President of the Polish Ceramic Society and the member of the board of the European Ceramic Society.  Since 2013 he is a member of the World Academy of Science - Class Science. He organized many scientific conferences, e.g. E-MRS, Fall Meeting, „Polska Ceramika”, conferences of the Polish Ceramic Society. He cooperate with many scientific institutions in Poland and in the World, e.g. Institute of High Pressure Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Institute of Ceramics and Buildings Materials, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi`an, (China); National Institute for Materials Science, Tsukuba, (Japan); EMPA, Materials Science and Technology, Zürich, (Switzerland); Instituto De Ceramica y Vidrio, Madrid (Spain);  Institute for Problems of Materials Science National Academy of Science, Kiev, (Ukraine). In 2014  he obtain “Distinguished Award 2014 for Novel Materials and their Synthesis given by International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry & Organization Committee of Novel Materials and their Synthesis.

Lecture: New Class of Refractory Ceramics for Thermal Barrier Coatings

Pan is the professor and director of State Key Lab of New Ceramics and Fine Processing of China. He received BS(1982) degree in engineering from the University of Science and Technology Beijing in China, MS(1987) and PhD(1990) degrees in engineering from Nagoya University in Japan. He currently served the member of University Council of Tsinghua University; fellow of School of Engineering of University of Tokyo; member of standing-committee of the Chinese Ceramic Society, and member of the editorial board of several international journals. He is also the member of World Academy of Ceramics. His research interests include low thermal conductive ceramics for gas-turbine, solid-electrolyte, and nano-ceramics.

Lecture: A review on the steric stabilization of aqueous ceramic based dispersion by anion and cation type comb copolymers

Prof. Dr. Thomas Graule is Head of the Laboratory for High Performance Ceramics at Empa. He studied Inorganic, Analytical and Organic Chemistry, following he completed his PhD at Max Planck Institute for Materials Research, Stuttgart. After working as a scientist at Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, as an assistant professor in advanced shaping techniques at ETH Zürich and in ceramics industry as Head of R+D in a Swiss SME he joined Empa in 1999. Thomas is appointed Professor for Nanoparticle Synthesis and Nanocomposite Technology at the University of Freiberg, Germany, visiting professor at the University of Science and Technology, AGH, in Krakow, PL, lecturer at ETH Zurich and at several Universities of Applied Sciences.

Main competence are in (nano) powder synthesis, surface modification of powders and advanced fiber shaping techniques.

Graduate of the Gliwice Vocational Technical High School for Ceramics and the Faculty of Materials Science and Ceramics of AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, as well as postgraduate studies in the domain of thermal engineering. Mr Siwiec has been involved with Zakłady Magnezytowe “ROPCZYCE” S.A. since 1979. He worked as a technologist, production foreman, production department manager, production and trade director, managing director. In the years 1992-2000 he was a member of the Company’s management board, and since 2000 he has been holding the position of the President of the Management Board.

M. Darłak - Higher education, master of science in chemistry. Graduate of the Faculty of Materials Science and Ceramics of AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków. Mr Darłak has been involved with Zakłady Magnezytowe “ROPCZYCE” S.A. since 1978. He worked as a production foreman, production department manager, manager of the quality control department, quality manager, production manager, development and production director. Since 2000 he has been a member of the Company’s management board. Since 2009 he has been holding the position of the Vice-President of the Management Board for Quality And Development.

He is responsible for business development in Poland, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan. 2008-2015 – the President of the Management Board of Sanitec Koło and Senior Vice President of the Sanitec Group responsible for CEE region, also for Russia and Ukraine. 2004-2008 – responsible for marketing and sales in CEE region at Sanitec Koło. He began his professional career in 1997 in the field of marketing services and consulting, initially in Poland, then in Germany.
